What Lies Beneath Smethwick Baths with Ian Lawman

Smethwick Swimming Pool has a relatively short history, nonetheless a very interesting one.  The centre was opened in 1933 and is now considered to be a building of special architectural and historic interest, with a grade 2 listing.

During the 50’s and 60’s from September to March the swimming pool was boarded over and used for concerts and dances.  Many famous entertainers have walked through these doors, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Tommy Cooper, Billy Fury, Spencer Davis group and many other big names during this time.

However, the centre has not always been used for entertaining the public.  There is a darker history to Smethwick swimming baths... During World War II the basement, which is a network of tunnels, was used as a Morgue and community air raid shelter. Since this time people have started to experience strange phenomena.  Since 1939 there have been many reported incidents, from the chilling sound of children laughing to the more bizarre sighting of the ghostly figure of a man dressed in a green uniform.  He has been seen on a number of occasions now, one night he was witnessed by ten startled guest as he slowly walked passed them in one of the tunnels.  The activity is not only confined to the tunnels, there is also very strange feeling in the in other parts of the building that are buzzing with activity.  Late at night after the swimming pool was closed, staff reported the sound of walking footsteps behind them.  When they checked out the area they were surprised to find a number of wet foot prints behind them.

Smethwick Swimming Pool has gained a reputation for being a very active location which has enticed hardened ghost hunters to this very strange location of paranormal interest.
