Torment of Tonbridge Castle
Mysteria Paranormal Events next adventure takes you to the historical Tonbridge market town in the
county of Kent.
1066, William the Conqueror defeated King Harold at the battle of Hastings, following the conquest,
Richard Fitz Gillbert was granted land in Kent. His first task was to guard the River Medway, and to do this he
erected a typical motte and bailey castle.
The year 1088 brought about siege to the castle and the town of Tonbridge when King William II had
the estate burnt to the ground after De Clare, descendents of Fitz Gilbert, rebelled against the
King.
In around 1100 the De Clare family rebuilt the castle with a stone keep and by 1260 a mighty twin
towered gatehouse was constructed which took 30 years to build.
Despite the new fortifications the castle had suffered attack on a number of occasions, captured by
King John in 1215 and by Henry III in 1262.
1314 the castle came to be in the possession of the Earls and Dukes of Buckingham, the third Duke
was executed for treason by Henry VIII and the castle was taken by the crown.
In 1793 a mansion was added to the side of the castle, both castle and mansion are Grade 1 listed
buildings.
With a long history of trauma the castle and the town of Tonbridge is known to be very haunted, the
castle has been laid siege on several occasions, witnessed horrific torture and public execution. More recent
ghost is that of Elizabeth Lewis. In 1982 she lost her collie dog, which fell down a deep hole in the castle
grounds whilst chasing a butterfly. Unfortunately Elizabeth fell in the hole too when she made a vain attempt to
rescue the whimpering hound. Despite her screaming, nobody heard her distress calls. A few days later the
collie dog died, then three days later Elizabeth dead of starvation.
