The Ragged Haunting
The museum as it stands now was once the largest free school for poor children in London, hence it was fondly known as the “Ragged School”.
In 1866 Thomas Barnardo left his home in Dublin, his goal was to train as a doctor and become a missionary in China. He soon discovered that London had a problem that was being ignored, appalling conditions and the overcrowding of the poor. Education opportunities for the poor were non-existent, poverty and disease were spiralling out of control. The East End of London suffered a devastating blow when cholera claimed 3,000 dead and many destitute.
Thomas was overwhelmed of the plight of the poor and decided that his missionary works were indeed needed in London and in 1867 he opened his first free school for the poor.
Over the next 30 years he provided basic education, food and shelter for many of the East End poor children. Woe betide if any of the children stepped out of line, the rules of conduct were very strict...
For whatever reason the Ragged School museum is haunted from the memories of the past. Floating shadows, children’s cries are just some of the activity you may encounter if you decide to join us at the Ragged School Museum...
