The Haunting of Stanley Palace with Leading Paranormal Investigator John BlackburnBuilt in 1591 as a town house for Sir Peter Warburton, Stanley Palace has been a family home for some and a prison for others. The 7th Earl of Derby, James Stanley, foolishly spoke out once too often and voiced his Royalist opinions supporting the exiled King Charles II. After the Parliamentarian’s victor in the English Civil War England was a dangerous place for such opinions. In 1561 James Stanley was convicted of treason and was kept under strict house arrest by the Roundhead soldiers until the last day of his demise when traumatically he said his final farewell to family and friends as he was escorted to Bolton where he was executed. For me there is no doubt that Stanley Palace is haunted by the troubled spirit of James Stanley, five years ago I attend a ghost hunt at Stanley Palace where I conducted an experiment. I lay a long surveying tape measure down on the floor and the team on that night managed to table tip over 76 feet in length up and down one of the rooms, which is also on record.
