Designed by Jesse Hartley, Stanley Dock was opened in 1848. The construction of Stanley Dock Warehouse followed, and was opened in 1901. Tobacco storage was the main product that took up the largest area of Stanley Dock Warehouse. However in the II World War storage in the basement was being used for something very different, it was to be used as a morgue for American servicemen who sadly fell victim to the great war. One of the most famous episodes of Stanley Docks history was of a man who was caught stealing some of the bodies, the body snatcher was shot dead for his efforts and is said to be responsible for some of the hauntings that take place here.
During the lifetime of the warehouse, it served as a port between UK and America. A number of murders were committed; immigrants and travellers were often blamed, sometimes without supporting evidence.
There have been a number of sightings and reports of paranormal activity. The ghost of the body snatcher is believed to roam the warehouse, especially in the basement area. Ghosts of American service men have also been reported and the spirit of an evil doctor. One of the most disturbing reports is that of a headless woman who was believed to be decapitated due to an accident in Stanley Copper Works.
This grade II listed building is a ghost hunting paradise for those of you who desire adventure and have the courage to do so...
