The history of Smithills Hall goes back 800 years, the first written records associated with the hall relates to William Radcliffe who obtained the manor from the Hulton family in 1335. The last Radcliffe died in 1485 without a male heir to carry on the family name. Consequently over the years Smithills Hall passed through numerous hands until the Belasyse family took it over who owned many properties around England. Unfortunately Smithills Hall was just another number in Belasyses family property chain and the hall suffered period of neglect. In 1801 the hall and the estate were sold to the Ainsworth family who extensively rebuilt and modernised the building. With the change in the British economy after the First World War the family could no longer afford the financial burden of maintaining a large house and eventually the hall was sold to Bolton Council In 1938 for the sum of £70,600. Smithills Hall is not just famous for its history but also the haunting and ghost stories that have put the building firmly on the map of being the most haunted location in the area. One recent story I gathered whilst talking to one of the custodians was particularly interesting. One of the estate managers was in the Victorian wing of the building, looking around the hall making sure everything was ok. Suddenly she felt someone touch her, immediately she turned to one of her colleagues and told her to stop messing around. Her colleague replied that she never touched her and she was stood some distance away from her. After looking around the building they both returned to the cafe area to sit down and enjoy a break with a hot cup of tea, suddenly a chill ran down her back as she noticed a child’s handprint on the front of her black skirt. Other phenomena reported is the sound of children laughing, ghostly footsteps, the feeling of being watched, doors opening of their own accord & the smell of wet dog and cigar smoke.
