The Castle Keep Phenomenon
Join Mysteria Paranormal Events
and Suzanne Gill in a night of suspense as we investigate "The
Castle Keep" Newcastle upon Tyne. A location tainted by sadness, cruelty and bloodshed.
Emotions have run high throughout its terrible history which have left lasting impressions on some of its
ghostly inhabitants. This location is experiencing high levels of paranormal activity especially in the
most frightening room in the Keep, the Mezzanine
chamber...
The Newcastle Keep stands on a site that has been occupied for nearly 2000 years. From the
2nd century until the beginning of the 5th century Pons Aelius Roman fort was
constructed as an auxiliary and a small Roman settlement on the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall, situated on
the north bank of the river Tyne.
In 1080 the first motte and bailey castle was founded by William the Conqueror’s son Robert
Curthose and it was not until the reign of Henry II when the castle was rebuilt in stone between 1168 and
1178. Many changes have taken place in the castles history,
nevertheless the mighty castle keep has stood proud, fortunately it has been restored on numerous occasions
between 1810 to 1980. It is now considered to be one of the finest surviving examples of a Norman Keep in the
country.
This grade 1 listed building has suffered attack; it experienced the English Civil war and saw
sorrow and misery when it was used as a prison in the sixteenth century. A cocktail of emotions and sadness
in the buildings fabric has deemed Newcastle Keep to be an extremely haunted location; investigators have
travelled far and wide to discover who or what frequents the keep when the night falls.
It is believed that the most active ghost in the keep is “the Poppy Girl” who was sent to
prison for owing money. The poor unfortunate flower girl was
raped and beaten to death by the male prisoners.
The Mezzanine chamber is believed to have been a holding cell for prisoners who were
condemned to death is said to be the most frightening room in the keep and has unsettled many determined
ghost hunters. Have you got the nerve to stay the distance and join Mysteria Paranormal Events in an
overnight investigation of “The Castle Keep”, Newcastle upon Tyne.
