When the early morning mist slowly pervades the hillsides of the Wye
Valley, Gloucestershire, there stands a medieval castle that has a reputation of being one of the most
haunted castles in the UK. Phantom footsteps, dark shadows & mysterious lights are just a few of the
daily occurrences at St Briavel’s
Castle.
The site was
first fortified by the Norman lord William Fitz Baderon after he obtained the estate in 1086, the first
fortification was a motte & bailey fortress which was replaced by a square stone keep sometime in the
12th century.
Throughout
the medieval period St Briavels served as a royal administrative centre for the Forest of Dean. The remains
of one of the hanging post's can still be seen in the loft area that once protruded out of the castle to
display numerous swinging bodies.
The castle
has welcomed many royal visitors over the centuries, including King John, Henry II, and Edward II who have
used the castle as a hunting lodge during their visits to the Forest of Dean.
Between
1209-1211the keep was extended and strengthened & in addition domestic buildings, royal apartments, and a
twin-towered gatehouse was built. The gatehouse was rebuilt by Edward I in 1292, forming the basis of the
castle we can see today.
St Briavel’s
castle is a romantic setting during the day, but when night falls the castle has a more sinister
feel. The castle is now a flourishing youth hostel & has many rave reviews; however there are
stories of people who have left in the middle of the night due to extreme paranormal
activity.
