Special Price!! Ghost Hunt at the Clitheroe Castle Museum, with free hot
supper!!
Dominating the skyline above Clitheroe, stands the second smallest keep in England. It has
been suggested that the castle may have been built before 1086 after a reference in the Domesday Book to
“Castlellatu Rodgerii Pictaviensis”, however it has not been confirmed. Another strong approximation is that
it was built by Robert de Lacy in 1186 and used as an administrative centre for his estates. Nevertheless it
still holds the claim to fame that it is one of the oldest buildings in Lancashire.
In 1612 a law was passed which forbid any act of “making a covenant with an evil
spirit, hurting life or limb, injuring live stock by means of charms or procuring love". All acts were subject to the death penalty. By order
of James I. During the Pendle which trials Margaret Pearson was one of
the fortunate victims who got away with only being pilloried at Clitheroe Castle, head and hands locked in a
wooden framework on a post to be exposed to public scorn as punishment. She was also
pilloried at Padiham, Whalley and Lancaster, followed by a year of imprisonment at Lancaster
Castle.
Clitheroe Castle Keep has
a large hole on one side which local folk law suggest was caused by the devil. He was
having trouble with the folk at the castle and wanted get rid of the pesky humans. He picked up various large
stones and put them in his apron and threw them at the castle, most missed but one hit the side of the
keep. In his rage he dropped a great pile of rocks on Pendle Hill, creating the “Devil’s
Apronful” on Apronfull Hill. In reality the pile of rocks were probably a cairn, a land
mark or prehistoric burial mound made of stones.
Clitheroe Castle Museum
dates back to the mid 1700’s and was originally a court house, prison and administration
centre. Buildings with such a past usually leave imprints of occupants that once worked
and lived or even were imprisoned. Clitheroe Castle museum is without exception, when all
the visitors have gone home the museum staff often feel that they are not alone when locking up the building
at night. On a couple of occasions staff have looked back when leaving the building to
notice that a figure looking down at them from one of the upstairs windows. Unexplained
noises have been heard on numerous occasions and even ghostly apparitions have been seen...
