Masonic Mysteries of Guys Cliffe with Ian Lawman
The dark embrace of the night sky slowly highlights the silhouette of Guys Cliffe. On the
surface it looks to be only a ruin, below the facade however is a place of legends
andMystery.
Sited on a place of pagan significance the roots of Guys Cliffe history dates back to the
7th Century when an Oratory was founded here.
The 10th Century
told stories of the legendary Sir Guy of Warwick who fell in love with lady Felice, a woman of higher social
standing. In order to wed Lady Felice he must prove his valour in chivalric adventures, battling fantastic
monsters and giants on his quest to become a knight. He returns to take his bride, but full of remorse for his
violent past, he leaves on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, later to return to live out his life as a hermit in a
cave at the rear of Guys Cliffe.
Lady Felice, devastated with the loss of Sir Guy committed suicide by throwing herself from a
cliff. Her ghost is said to walk the avenue of trees in the grounds of the mansion and is usually seen in
September. The most recent sighting of the lady was only last year.
In the 1400’s Henry V came to visit the Earl of Warwick, he was dismayed by the
state of the Oratory and decided to build a chapel on a grandly scale. The reformation for the monasteries
brought about change and it was closed down. Henry VIII’s favourite subject, Sir Andrew Flamock built an
Elizabethan manor on this site which existed until the early 1700’s.
Guys Cliffe House as it is now
began life in 1750 by Samuel Greathed who derived his fortune from plantation ownership and the misery of
slavery in the Caribbean.
A more recent legend is that of one of the most notorious magicians of his time. In
1889 Aleister Crowley was initiated into the Golden Dawn, one of the most influential occult groups
in Britain. It is said that Aleister Crowley left the Golden Dawn in 1900 after a dispute with the Magus
which resulted in a supposed magical battle with MacGregor Mathers. It is said that the battle took place in
a cave on the mansion grounds.
World War 1 brought more negative energy to the buildings unsettled past as 600 wounded and
dying soldiers were looked after here. The spirits of those dead soldiers have been reported on a number of
occasions and have communicated through glass divination.
