 In Search of Ghost at Coalhouse Fort with Ian LawmanSituated alongside the River Thames in East Tilbury, Essex is “Coalhouse Fort”. Built around 1874 it is famous for being one of the best examples of armoured Victorian coastal defences in the UK. This fascinating location enticed the makers of “Batman Begins” for their opening scene when Bruce Wayne was discovered by Ducard in the “Bhutanese” prison. On the site of Coalhouse fort there have been defences in place dating back to 1402 when towers were constructed to defend villagers from French invaders. King Henry VIII instigated a more ambitious programme when he commissioned the building of blockhouses to be part of a first line of defences of the River Thames, some of the building materials were taken from “St Margaret’s Chapel”. Cost of construction £506. Coalhouse fort has been home to many regiments throughout its long history from The Royal Garrison Artillery 1874 – 1902 to various WWI and WWII regiments.
