The mansion was built for Sir Gilbert Greenall between 1836 and 1838 in an Elizabethan style by Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster, who became famous for the Gothic revival of Victorian architecture. Sir Gilbert Greenall’s family wealth was brought about by his great – Grandfather Thomas Greenall who established a brewing company in 1762. Sir Gilbert, 1st Baron of Daresbury, lived in the house until his death 1938. One of the mansions famous visitors was Lewis Carroll who was enchanted by the wooded ridge and the nearby Bridgewater Canal. The house has one other famous occupant who makes the odd appearance to the dismay of the terrified victim, the house is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Daresbury, who in the past has made an appearance on the staircase to this grade II listed building on a number of occasions. Staff and visitors have experienced a whole manor of incidents from doors that mysteriously slam shut to the feeling of being followed by some unseen stalker...
