A Night of Terror at York Guildhall with Ian Lawman
Dating back to 1440 The York
Guildhall is one of the oldest buildings in York. Despite being partially destroyed in the II World War by an
incendiary bomb the building was lovingly restored and still remains an architectural
masterpiece.

Earning the notoriety of being one of the most famous buildings in the York Guildhall history
is particularly famous for when it was a Court of Justice and for the infamous trial of Margaret Clitherow
for practising Catholicism in 1586. She was arrested and called before the York assizes for the crime of
harbouring Roman Catholic priests.
Her punishment was to be crushed to
death. She was stripped and forced to lay on sharp rocks the size of a man’s fist, a
door was placed on top of her and slowly an enormous weight of rocks were loaded on top of the door until the
smaller sharp rocks under her back snapped her spine. Her agonising torture lasted
fifteen minutes.
After her death her arm was removed and the shrivelled arm can still be seen in the chapel of
the Bar Convent.
With such a long history it’s of no surprise that there have been many reports of paranormal
activity. One of the strangest reported incidents was when one of the York Guildhall managers discovered
footprints of a child on top of a seven foot grandfather clock when he took the top off the clock to windup
its mechanism.
To make your investigation more
exciting we will take you into extreme darkness as we guide you underneath the York Guildhall to Commonhall
Lane, the only remaining accessible medieval lane in York that used to be connected Stonegate. The dark
intimidating lane holds secretes from the past when the murder of a number of servants was carried out there, no
one to this day knows the motive for their demise.
